It appears to have some serious talent behind it, because in a fairly short time, Handbrake has flourished.

Earlier versions were good, too, but it involved more decision-making and in some cases, guesses, about how to get the best results. Some of the advanced settings were complicated and intimidating to those of us (most of us) who aren't technical. (a few years ago, any DVD-transfer software app was either too primitive, or too advanced for a casual user to whack into with confidence) now it really is drop-dead easy.

And it still has enough advanced settings to satisfy even the most demanding user, or to satisfy the most arcane customized tasks. How often do we have a highly-specialized task? Usually, we have a DVD, and a place we want to put that content once it's been reformatted. (iPod, PS2, Quicktime, iPhone, XBox, Apple TV, etc.) with the optimal settings for each of those devices pre-formatted for best results.

No guesswork is required. No tweaking necessary. We never have to lift the hood and look inside at the engine, no tuning, no tweaking. Now all we have to do is get in, turn the key, start the car, and go.

Supposedly, the new version includes the ability to encode the Dolby Digital 5.1 stream with the output for Apple TV, but I must be doing something wrong, because my AV receiver never detect a 5.1 stream from my optically attached mac Mini during playback through FrontRow. Perhaps the 5.1 *only* works with AppleTV? Am running OS X 10.5.2 and the latest version of Handbrake. Selected the 'AppleTV' profile for ripping, and the audio tab shows 5.1 as selected in the first (left) drop down menu.

Anyone know if 5.1 playback from these rips will work on a Mac Mini? Haven't checked yet on an AppleTV (don't have one handy) to see if the 5.1 stream is there. Also, FWIW I encountered my first 'protected' disc '3:10 to Yuma' that wouldn't fully scan for chapters in HandBrake; just hung on the last chapter. Ended up doing an end run by using MacTheRipper first with the 'Error detect/by-pass' mode on to extract the VOB files first. After that, Handbrake had no problem converting from the extracted files.

All- so i downloaded handbrake 9.1 since i'm still using osx 10.4.10 (9.2 is for 10.5) the dl went well and i now have a disk image on my desktop. Inside the disk image is the handbrake icon and a file labelled docs. I double click on the icon and handbrake opens with an activity screen.

I load the dvd i'm interested in cloning. The dvd loads. And then i wait. And nothing happens. Under source no menu options are available, everything is grey-out. What am i doing wrong? Do i drag the handbrake icon to my applications folder?

Use your CD/DVD drive a LOT. Have an older, slower CD/DVD drive that jerks around and makes a lot of noise and is inefficient C.

Have an older, slower computer that doesn't benefit from Handbrake's speed and efficiency. Watch DVD titles with encryptions that are so MODERN, most of us don't encounter them when we watch movies. I use both MacTheRipper, and Handbrake. The experience you describe is unique to you, your computer, and your habits. It may not necessarily reflect the experience of many of us.

In my experience, if a DVD's encryption beats Handbrake, it'll beat MTR, too. No exceptions. I've never had a DVD beat one, and not the other. If Handbrake can't decode it, neither can MTR. Your subjective experience may be different. Transferring Gigabytes of data TWICE, from the DVD, to the hard drive, and again, from one place on the hard drive, to another place on the hard drive, for most of us, is just unnecessary. Unless there is a special reason---like, we really need our DVD drive for something else, right now--using MacTheRipper AND Handbrake is introducing additional steps into a process that for most of us, aren't required.

MacTheRipper hasn't been updated in AGES. It isn't capable of decoding anything particularly MODERN, otherwise, its developers would make an effort to respond to new encoding methods, and keep the application current. It's been stuck at 2.6.6 as long as I can remember.
