I’m still recognised as Chottanikkara Devi I was the first artiste to perform solo Mohiniyattam on Doordarshan, Thiruvananthapuram Kendra when it was launched in 1983. Later I got the opportunity to act in a teleplay aired on Doordarshan titled Kayangal, directed by CK Thomas. My second teleplay was where I debuted as a heroine as Dr Jayanthi. I feel lucky to be part of it as I could act alongside NK Achary sir, father of in it. It was a great experience to work with an actor like him when I was just in my teens. My mother was the reason behind my big screen entry, which I made through the film as Chottanikkara Devi in 1987.
It was directed by Sreekumaran Thampi. Cinema was a new medium for me then and I somehow had a dislike to it. Once, I had an accident on the set where I fell from a great height. But I consider it as a knock from goddess Shakthi to me.
The role gave me recognition in the industry. It was a great honour for me when veteran actor Thikkurussi sir once rushed towards me during a function saying “ente devi alle ithu sakhshal bhagavathi anu”. People still recognise me as Chottanikkara Devi.
A transgender student in my daughter’s college recently conveyed to me that my role as Chottanikara Devi had motivated the person to have faith in God. I had also tried a hand as a voice artiste in AIR and for several commercial ads. Then came a bunch of television soaps and a few supporting roles in films. I was the first person to introduce a dance tutorial to the Malayalam telly audience. I am not happy with my acting career To be honest, I am not happy with my acting career. I have not yet received a role which I can call my favourite character.
From the mainstream, I was side-lined to smaller roles. I had played mother roles to actors who are two to three years older to me when I was in my mid-20s. I continue to do the same now also (laughs). I didn’t go for roles, I accepted what came to me and dedicated my 100% to it. Bhuvanasundari, a glamourous evil character in the serial Hello Kuttichathan was a big break for me.
It gave me the opportunity to experiment with acting. An evil Pappammal Versus a pavam Mallika Pappammal and Mallika are my characters in the serials Krishnathulasi and Karuthamutthu respectively.
Pappammal is an evil lady and the dancer in me has helped me bring out her devilish expressions. When out in the streets, people ask me two things; one, whether my hair is real and second, where I get my saris from! Mallika, on the other hand, is someone who cries from the beginning of a schedule till the end. I sometimes cry without glycerine.
She is not a suppressed woman, but the heinous acts against her loved ones forces her to change from a soft, teary mother to a fierce one, something which you see in real-life too as well.
